Who is Jay Kinra?
The musician’s name is Jay Kinra. He is best known as the frontman, vocalist and guitarist of JAYSDEAD, a Pune-based punk/pop-punk project shaped by his American upbringing and years spent in India.
Jay was born in the United States to Indian immigrant parents and grew up in different parts of America, including Florida, Boston and California. He later moved to India in 2008, creating a life that sits between two very different cultural experiences. His parents had moved to the United States in the early 1970s and still live there.
That cross-cultural background has become an important part of his artistic identity. Jay has spoken about how his American upbringing influenced his taste in punk music, while his life in India gave him an entirely different environment in which to develop as an artist.

Music was around Jay from an early age. In a 2026 profile, he recalled that his brother was the singer and songwriter of a punk band in Melbourne Beach, Florida, when Jay was about ten years old. That early exposure became part of the musical world he eventually entered himself.
His influences include some of the most recognisable names in American punk and alternative music, including Descendents, Minor Threat, Operation Ivy, Nirvana, Misfits, NOFX and Dinosaur Jr.

Before JAYSDEAD, there was Doctor Zebra
Jay’s musical journey in India goes back more than a decade.
He was the frontman of Pune punk-rock band Doctor Zebra, which was formed in 2013. Contemporary coverage from Rolling Stone India described Jay as the band’s frontman and noted that he had written at least 14 songs for the group during its early period. The band’s music focused on upbeat punk, with songs about subjects including surfing, skateboarding and everyday life.
Doctor Zebra’s 2014 album Surfer Girl featured songs including “Breed It,” “Surfer Girl,” “Let’s Go,” “Blast Off,” “Life Line,” “Find The Time” and “Turn It Back.” Jay was credited with vocals and guitars.
His interest in surfing and skateboarding was especially connected to his childhood in the United States. Jay explained at the time that surfing had been a major part of his life growing up in America, which naturally found its way into his songwriting.
How JAYSDEAD emerged
Today, Jay is best known for JAYSDEAD, a Pune-based punk project rooted in the sound and attitude of 1990s punk and modern pop-punk.
The band describes itself through movement, emotion and a strong connection to skateboarding culture. Its music combines fast-paced punk energy, melodic hooks and contemporary production.
JAYSDEAD’s songwriting is often intensely personal. According to Unite Asia, Jay’s songs can begin with a melody that comes to him late at night, followed by voice-note recordings and early-morning songwriting sessions. That instinctive process gives the music an immediate and emotionally direct character.
The band has also developed a strong connection with India’s growing skate community. Jay himself is a lifelong skater, and the overlap between punk and skate culture has helped JAYSDEAD find an audience in India’s underground music scene.
JAYSDEAD’s music and growing audience
JAYSDEAD’s catalogue has grown significantly during 2025 and 2026.
The band released “My Hands” in November 2025, followed by “Me Love” and later “God Save America.” Apple Music lists “My Hands,” “Me Love” and “God Save America” among JAYSDEAD’s releases.
The band’s live set has also expanded. A 2026 profile reported that JAYSDEAD had around 16 original songs in its live repertoire. Songs such as “My Hands” and “Me Love” were already available on streaming platforms, while unreleased tracks including “Sugar Daddy” were generating audience singalongs at shows.
The band’s live performances can apparently become just as chaotic and energetic as classic punk shows. Jay recalled a college festival where more than 1,000 people attended, with fans moshing and even climbing onto the stage.
The story behind “God Save America”
One of Jay’s most striking recent projects is “God Save America.”
The song reflects the complicated relationship Jay has with the country where he was born and raised. According to his account, he began writing the first half in September 2025 as political events in the United States intensified. He later returned to the song after the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota in January 2026.
Jay said the events affected him emotionally and that he cried while writing part of the song. The result was a deeply personal punk song about fear, disappointment, identity and his emotional reaction to America’s political atmosphere.
The song was released on March 25, 2026, and its creation also resulted in an unusual international collaboration. A clip Jay posted through his “Sunday Riffing with Jaysdead” series caught the attention of Jonathan Stein, a producer associated with Pancake Mountain. That connection eventually brought Jay together with filmmaker Scott Crawford, director of the punk documentary Salad Days, and creator/editor Scott Stuckey for the music video.
The video was produced across India and the United States, with the teams working remotely through Zoom. The concept transformed Jay into a news presenter who breaks away from the script and starts speaking his own mind.
Jay Kinra’s life between America and India
Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of Jay’s story is his complicated relationship with both countries.
He grew up American, but has spent much of his adult life in India. That means neither identity can be separated completely from his music.
In discussing “God Save America,” Jay explained that he no longer feels completely safe when returning to the United States and described a sense of tension and discrimination that he experiences there. He also spoke about how even his family worries about political discussions and possible consequences.
At the same time, Jay has embraced India as the home of his music career. JAYSDEAD is based in Pune, and he sees India’s emerging punk and skateboarding communities as an opportunity rather than a limitation.
He has even pointed to Hanumankind and Girish and the Chronicles as examples of Indian artists crossing boundaries internationally, saying that JAYSDEAD wants to achieve something comparable for pop-punk.
